WORLD DAY OF THE ELDERLY
Since the institution of World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, in 2021 by Pope Francis, which takes place annually every fourth Sunday in July, close to the feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus, the Province has always celebrated that day with our elderly confreres at the Holy Ghost Haven, Mgbidi. This year took a robust turn, as the Provincial and some of his counsellors, some confreres, some board members of the Spiritan Healthcare Apostolate, and the worshipping community at Holy Ghost Haven gathered for an elaborate celebration.
In our Province, this celebration serves as a platform to recognize and celebrate the significant contributions of our elderly, sick and retired confreres to the Congregation. The Provincial Administration ensures that the challenges faced by the elderly are addressed and their well-being and dignity are promoted. On July 23, 2023, the event started at 9:00 a.m. with a Holy Mass which was led by the Provincial Superior, Fr. Austin Nwosu, C.S.Sp. He was assisted by his Second Assistant, Fr. Val Ezeh, C.S.Sp and Fr. Anthony Ugo, C.S.Sp., a member of the Holy Ghost Haven Community.
In his homily, the Provincial reflected on the theme “His mercy is from age to age”. He emphasized the importance of intergenerational relationships, with the Holy Spirit guiding the exchange between the young and the old. The mutual benefits of these connections encourage young people to gain wisdom from the elderly while they bring joy into their lives. He appreciated the elderly for all their contributions to the Province and enjoined everyone to always pray for them.
After the post-communion prayers, the elderly confreres and other elderly members of the congregation (from 70 years and above) gathered at the foot of the altar for recognitions and prayers. Thereafter, the Provincial thanked all our elderly confreres for their sacrifices and efforts in the life of the Province. He recognized the Spiritan Healthcare Apostolate board members who were present and appreciated their contributions towards the welfare of our sick and retired confreres. He also appreciated those taking care of the Holy Ghost Haven community, especially the medical team led by Fr. Damasus Okoro, C.S.Sp. After the Mass, there were group photographs and a sumptuous meal at the community refectory. Many friends and well-wishers of our elderly confreres were around to celebrate with them and the Province.
